Traffic came to a standstill in Soroti City as David Calvin Echodu officially launched his campaign for the Soroti City West parliamentary seat, drawing both excitement and concern among residents and business owners. The NRM National Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda is making a second bid for the seat, having narrowly lost to Jothanan Ebwalu in the 2021 elections. The campaign kickoff took place at Pamba Primary School in Pamba Ward, Soroti City West, and was preceded by a vibrant procession along Soroti-Mbale Road, featuring chanting, music, and waving banners.
The celebratory parade paralyzed traffic for over an hour, leaving commuters frustrated. Taxi driver Paul Opure said, “I parked my car for about an hour as Echodu entered town, but people believe in his vision for Soroti, and that’s worth the wait.” Market vendor Debora Asudo acknowledged the disruption to business but highlighted the community’s excitement, urging Echodu to tackle long-standing issues such as waste management in Soroti.
Echodu’s campaign promises focus on improving service delivery in education, infrastructure, and road maintenance. Residents have expressed hope that his leadership will address dusty and poorly maintained streets, as well as enhance school facilities.
The procession included trailer drivers, taxi operators, and motorcycle riders, many of whom joined the celebrations despite the traffic chaos. As the race intensifies, Echodu faces competition from Patrick Anoku (Independent), Emmanuel Elau (NUP), and Jonathan Ebwalu (FDC).
