Three bodies have been recovered from Alito Bridge in Kapelebyong district after passengers were swept away by floods.
The incident occurred on Thursday, when a Gateway bus travelling from Lira to Abim, reportedly attempted to cross the flooded bridge before losing control and tilting into deep waters, throwing passengers off their seats.
Several passengers were injured, and others have been reported missing. The driver of the Gateway bus reportedly attempted to cross the flooded bridge before losing control.
According to Francis Akorikin, the LCV Chairperson for Kapelebyong district, the dead have been identified as Isaiah Okorinyang from Kabong district, Kennedy Odong from Lira district, and Cavin Alupo from Acukudu, Napak district. An unspecified number of individuals are still missing, and rescue operations are ongoing to locate them.
Akorikin also stated that the road has been closed for public safety, which has disrupted access between Kapelebyong and Otuke districts. The bridge is currently deemed unusable for traffic, and the army has been deployed to regulate access and ensure that no one attempts to cross.
Some victims were taken to Abim Hospital for treatment following the incident.
