Uganda’s national athletics team has begun a residential training camp in preparation for the 19th World Athletics Championships, scheduled from August 13 to 21, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan. The team, comprising over 20 athletes, is training at Trinity Biblical Institute in Kapchorwa under the supervision of national athletics coach and Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) Vice President (Technical), Benjamin Njia.
Speaking to Uganda Radio Network, Njia confirmed that the camp officially started on August 15 and will run until September 10, when the first group of athletes is expected to depart for Tokyo. “This six-week training is essential because it brings the team together for intensive preparation, technical drills, and race planning. It also enhances cohesion and teamwork, especially in long-distance races where coordination can influence race strategy,” Njia said.
Olympic gold medalist and 2021 World Champion in the 3000m steeplechase, Peruth Chemutai, praised the residential setup, noting that it allows athletes to focus without distractions. “When we are in camp, we can concentrate on our training without interference from family matters and other commitments. This helps us prepare better, both mentally and physically,” Chemutai said.
Victor Kiplangat, reigning World Champion in the men’s marathon, welcomed the initiative, saying that training together motivates athletes to push beyond their limits. “Training together builds motivation. Everyone is pushing, and that energy is contagious. It helps me remain sharp and confident heading into a major championship like this,” Kiplangat told URN.
The team features Uganda’s top long-distance runners, who qualified for the championship based on performances in previous international competitions and national trials. The UAF said it is working closely with the government and sponsors to ensure athletes receive adequate support ahead of the championship. Uganda has emerged as a strong force in global athletics over the past decade, consistently delivering medal-winning performances in long-distance events. Expectations remain high as the team intensifies preparations for Tokyo.
