Ugandan troops helping to secure President Salva Kiir’s government have embarked on refresher target shooting trainings.
The media have indicated that troops loyal to Kiir’s suspended Vice President Riek Machar could wage a war against the former’s government in retaliation, hence plunging the world’s youngest nation into a fresh full scale civil war.
Machar is has been charged with Treason and could face death if convicted.
Fears for resumption of the civil war which had largely ceased for the last seven years comes days after Kiir’s government charged Michar who has been under house arrest for five months with treason, murder and crimes against humanity.
Michar’s troops and his party members, according to the media, have described the charges as political witch-hunt which threatens the 2018 peace agreement and risks plunging the nation to another serious conflict.
Amid but not directly related to the developments, UPDF which deployed troops on Kiir’s request after learning that Michar’s troops were allegedly planning a military face off, Colonel Bernard R. Kashemeza, the commander of soldiers currently in South Sudan has caused refresher trainings.
UPDF has started with 48 officers and men who have exhibited target shooting skills at Bilinyanga in South Sudan. Col Kashemeza, who witnessed the military drillings and target shooting skills highlighted the value of knowledge and skills.
“Having fresh knowledge and skills enhances combat efficiency, capabilities, and readiness. The training is not for formality but is a vital means for building confidence and ensuring the mission is successful,” Col Kashemeza said.
Defence Public Information Office (DPIO) headed by Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye said the trainings are not punitive but prepares soldiers for future challenges, equipping them physically and mentally to perform their duties effectively.
DPIO and Col Kashemeza added that trainings prepares troops’ bodies and mind for that time when it comes as warriors to perform their duty. Col Kashemeza extolled instructors who are equipment soldiers in South Sudan with the necessary combatant readiness skills.
Major Nicholas Mutatiina, Battle Group Operations Officer, has urged the trainees to maintain the courage, discipline, and cooperation demonstrated during the pass-out ceremony, while recognising the commendable contributions of Brig Gen Mbuusi and the instructors.
