Because they are tired of voters and religious leaders begging them for money, many sitting MPs are thanking the electoral commission for the EC directive which has stopped them from attending and giving money in churches and other groups during fundraising functions in the constituency.
One of these happy MPs is Joyce Bagala of NUP who has been on radio praising the EC boss for making it clear they can’t give money during elections. She says what the EC has done is to just remind the country because this is already in the law.
She says the issue of giving people money during campaigns has always been a big problem because that is how Muwanga Kivumbi won a court case and became the new Butambala MP in 2012 when he replaced Faizal Kikulukunyu of NRM.
Bagala says that voters should understand and let the sitting MPs be free because even their opponents from NRM have deployed people with small cameras ready to photograph them giving out money and other goodies which can be used as evidence to sue them in court election petitions and remove them from parliament.
The NUP MP says people should stop inviting their MPs at functions of fundraising or else they are going to put them into big problems as their victory can be nullified basing on that.
