Security deployment has been intensified in Kamwenge District to prevent possible militia attacks, following coordinated assaults on police stations in Kasese, Bundibugyo, and Fort Portal on November 1.
Suspected assailants, armed with guns, pangas, spears, and other weapons, attacked and burned police posts in Kasese, targeted a military barracks in Bundibugyo, and were intercepted while heading to Canon Apollo Core Primary Teachers College in Fort Portal City.
The incidents have prompted security authorities in Kamwenge to heighten vigilance and safeguard residents and property. Africano Aharikunda, the Kamwenge Resident District Commissioner (RDC), said that given Kamwenge’s proximity to previously targeted areas and past attacks on the district, security has been strengthened across all potential hotspots.
He noted that joint forces comprising the UPDF, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, and Uganda Wildlife Authority have been strategically deployed throughout the district, and patrols are being conducted regularly. The RDC highlighted that some of the hotspots receiving heavy deployment include areas bordering Kibale National Park.
Africano further revealed that community sensitization meetings are ongoing to educate residents on how to respond in case of an attack and to encourage vigilance. He urged the public to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies are fully committed to ensuring their safety.
He also appealed to community members and local council leaders to report any suspicious individuals or activities to nearby security offices or local authorities to prevent potential threats.
In December 2023, suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels attacked villages in Kamwenge District on two occasions, killing 13 local residents. The rebels were reported to have been hiding in Kibale National Park.
