The sorry state of the Nyakanengo stretch along the Murutenga-Nyamasizi-Kerere road in Hamurwa sub-county, Rubanda district, has angered residents.
Commonly known as Kanyeihamba road, the 14.4 kilometre road branches off Kabale-Kisoro road and connects the area to Hamurwa-kanungu-Kihihi-Ishasha road. It also acts as an alternative to the Hamurwa-kanungu-Kihihi-Ishasha road when the Hamurwa spot floods.
Fred Bagamba, Aron Turyahikirira, Amos Ainamatsiko and Godfrey Ainaamaani, all residents in the area, explain that even during the dry season, the stretch keeps flooding due to poor drainage. They say the situation worsens when it rains, as floods block vehicles from crossing.
They say that they are forced to use stretchers to rush patients to health facilities. They say the problem has stayed for many years and has also affected the boda boda business in the area.
Bruce Arineitwe and Aron Turyahikirira, other concerned users, say that despite several appeals, there hasn’t been any intervention from the district authorities.
They say the stretch has suffocated businesses like transporting passengers and agricultural products to markets like Karukara market in Hamurwa town council.
John Habimana, Rubanda District Engineer, says that he has asked the Ministry of Works and Transport to intervene-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
