Police in Mukono have fired teargas to block groups of people attempting to join the procession of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, who is in the district for his main campaign rally.
Kyagulanyi began his day with a stopover at Misindye, at the home of Omutaka Christopher Kaddu Namutwe, a prominent elder of the Mbogo clan to which he belongs. He sought blessings ahead of his rallies across Mukono.
During the brief ceremony, Namutwe blessed Kyagulanyi and handed him a traditional shield and spear, symbolising hope, strength, and victory in his bid for the presidency.
Speaking after the visit, Kyagulanyi accused the police of persistently disrupting his movements. He said that despite the interference, he remained committed to a peaceful campaign, noting that he had not broken any law and that his mission was to unite Ugandans for the common good.
He condemned what he described as excessive security deployment against a candidate participating in a lawful electoral process. Kyagulanyi urged his supporters not to lose hope, assuring them that he intended to reach all designated campaign venues.
He also questioned why police regularly deploy heavily to disperse peaceful gatherings of citizens who simply want to listen to “messages of change and hope.” Throughout the day, Kyagulanyi is expected to hold mini-rallies and processions in Mukono North, Mukono South, and Nakifuma constituencies before addressing his main rally at Ntawo in Mukono Municipality.
However, police have continued firing teargas in several locations to clear crowds lining the roads to cheer him, and officers have been seen blocking people attempting to follow his convoy.
Kyagulanyi was briefly halted shortly after leaving Namutwe’s home but was later allowed to proceed under tight police escort and patrol surveillance. This, however, has not deterred his supporters from trailing him.
