Police in Busoga East have launched investigations into the circumstances under which Emmanuel Emorut, a security guard, allegedly took his own life by shooting. Emorut, attached to A-One Security Group, had been deployed to guard the privately owned Ibulanku weighbridge in Mulanga village, Ibulanku sub-county, Bugweri district.
Eyewitnesses say they heard gunshots on Tuesday evening at about 5:00 PM and fled into hiding, thinking the weighbridge was under attack by unknown assailants. Moments later, they claim to have seen Emorut’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, with the suspected killer’s weapon next to it.
One eyewitness, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the scene as devastating. Some tried to check his pulse with hopes of rushing him to a nearby health facility, while others alerted police immediately. He suspects Emorut may have suffered from uncontrollable depression for unknown reasons and possibly chose to end his life.
Another eyewitness, who had come to sell sugarcane, said the guard appeared jolly and exchanged pleasantries as they accessed the weighbridge. “We are fond of exchanging jokes with security guards in wait for payments for our sugarcane to be made,” he said. However, he noted that Emorut later isolated himself in the security booth—an unusual move that only made sense to regular clients after the incident.
He added that Emorut was approachable and welcoming to all, and that the nature of his death should serve as a wake-up call to address mental health challenges, as many similar cases go unnoticed until they turn fatal. Bugweri Resident District Commissioner, Banuli Magala, said the deceased’s body has been taken to Iganga General Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
He confirmed that detectives inspected the crime scene and documented exhibits of evidential value to aid further investigations. Magala urged the public to confide in close associates during difficult times. “Opening up to close confidants enables them to redefine the true meaning of life and choose to endure challenging situations with the hope of coming out someday,” he said.
