Police in Hoima City are hunting for two supporters of Hoima West Division Member of Parliament, Dr. Joseph Ruyonga, for allegedly attacking a supporter of his political rival. The suspects, only identified as Aguti and Mutegeki, are accused of hacking 25-year-old Albert Tuhaise, a boda boda rider and resident of Busiisi Cell, Hoima West Division, during a violent altercation at Busiisi Trading Centre on Wednesday morning around 8 a.m.
Tuhaise is reportedly a supporter of Donald Bategeka, Dr. Ruyonga’s rival in the upcoming parliamentary race and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer. According to information obtained by Uganda Radio Network (URN), the two camps were preparing for a joint campaign rally in Busiisi when clashes erupted between their supporters.
During the confrontation, Aguti and Mutegeki allegedly attacked Tuhaise with a panga, severely injuring his left hand. The victim was rushed to Kabalega Medical Centre where he is currently admitted in serious condition. Following the incident, the suspects fled to an unknown location, prompting a police manhunt. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway. He cautioned political candidates and their supporters to shun acts of violence and maintain peace during the election period.
Hakiza warned that engaging in election-related violence could lead to serious injuries or even death, adding that security agencies will not hesitate to apprehend perpetrators. As of the time of filing this report, both Dr. Ruyonga and Bategeka had not yet issued official statements regarding the incident-URN.
