A joint police operation by officers from Namugongo and Katwe police has led to the arrest of a suspected racket of motorcycle robberies in Katwe and Ndeeba.

One of the ringleaders, identified as Musa Body, allegedly dug a tunnel along the Nakivubo drainage channel, which his gang used to hide stolen motorcycles from various parts of the Kampala Metropolitan area.

The allegedly sells stolen motorcycles by either dismantling them for spare parts or temporarily hiding them in a tunnel along the Nakivubo drainage channel. They then repaint and alter the number plates before reselling the motorcycles.

A police officer from Katwe Police Station, revealed that the gang targets new motorcycles, hiding them in a tunnel. .”The days of thieves always come to an end, a breakthrough was made when one of the suspects, who had stolen a motorcycle in Namugongo Nsawo, was arrested and confessed, leading the police to the hiding spot.” An officer said.

The arrest of Musa-Body followed a swift response by Namugongo Police after Sam Kabuka, one of the gang members, who stole a motorcycle belonging to Charles Kasirye, a resident of Nsawo. Kabuka’s arrest led to further investigation and ultimately, the capture of the other suspects including Musa-Body.

Some of the victims have raised concerns that suspects allegedly bribe their way out of police custody, only to resume their criminal activities.

Michael Ssendawula has called on security agencies to designate Namugongo as a high-risk area for robberies and substantially increase the security presence to tackle the menace of thugs who are causing sleepless nights for local residents.

“We believe that once the police conduct serious operations in our area, these criminal gang members will be wiped out. They don’t target motorcycles alone, but other things as well. We have one of the highest rates of house-breakings, street robberies, and shop robberies in Namugongo.” Ssendawula said.
