The High Court in Kampala has denied bail to opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye and his assistant Hajji Obeid Lutaale.
Lady Justice Rosette Comfort Kania said that although, the applicants have satisfied all the relevant requirements for grant of bail such as proving that; they have fixed places of abode, have substantial sureties, are first time offenders with no criminal record and are of advanced age, she denied them bail on grounds that the charges against the two are grave offenses under the laws of Uganda.
She also said that the suspects will likely interfere with the investigations if released.
The ruling was received with Deafening silence from the court, which was filled by the suspects’ lawyers, relatives and friends, some of whom held back tears.
