Two weeks after the parliamentary election, Sheillah Princess Obia, a former candidate for the Arua City Woman MP seat, has dropped plans to challenge the results won by incumbent Mourine Osoru of the NRM.
Osoru was declared the winner on January 16 by Arua City Returning Officer Oshman Ezale, polling 37,896 votes to beat four other contestants. Independent Daphine Draza came second with 23,344 votes, while Obia placed third with 10,605. NUP’s Night Asara received 5,000 votes, and Sandra Ewachabo polled 2,031.
Obia initially disputed the results, citing irregularities at some polling stations, and had intended to seek a recount in court.
However, she has now conceded defeat and pledged to support Osoru in implementing her manifesto and collaborating on community initiatives, particularly on women’s issues.
Obia, who also contested on the NUP ticket in 2021, said her decision to rally behind Osoru is aimed at strengthening the NRM, of which she is a party member.
She said her role as NRM Publicity Secretary for Mvara Ward influenced her choice. Osoru welcomed the move, saying collaboration is key to addressing Arua City’s challenges.
“This is what we wanted for Arua City. Together we can build Arua City,” she said. A total of 82,738 voters participated in the race, with 79,369 valid votes and 3,369 invalid.
