National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters in Bunyangabu District have called on security agencies to uphold law and order ahead of the scheduled visit of their presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi, today. The NUP supporters expressed concern that recent actions by police, military, and prison authorities appear aimed at sabotaging Kyagulanyi’s rallies.
On Saturday, the opposition leader and his supporters were reportedly blocked from holding a campaign event, with security personnel and hired youths dispersing crowds using force and assaulting supporters. Party members say such confrontations discourage voters from attending rallies, hindering their ability to make informed political choices. They emphasized the need for peaceful campaigning and urged security forces to respect the electoral process.
Peter Mugisa, a NUP mobiliser in Bunyangabu, said the route for Kyagulanyi’s campaign had been clearly communicated by the Electoral Commission. He warned that any attempts by security personnel to alter it or confront supporters would be disappointing and assured that the party intends to comply with all electoral guidelines.
Abdallah Baluku, the Bunyangabu District NUP registrar, condemned the recent violence and the conduct of security agencies, noting that such actions undermine democracy. He also criticized individuals who reportedly crossed to the ruling NRM party on Saturday, saying they were not genuine NUP members.
Wilson Byamugisha, vying for the LCV seat under NUP, said the party is ready to host their presidential candidate and called on voters to attend in large numbers to hear the manifesto and learn how the party plans to address Bunyangabu’s issues.
Residents, including Isaac Kabagambe of Rubona Town Council, urged security to treat all candidates equally and hoped that the fairness extended to NRM’s flag bearer, Yoweri Museveni, would apply to other candidates. He warned that violence and intimidation create fear among voters and undermine the electoral process.
Brain Basisa of NUP stressed that presidential candidates must be accorded respect by security forces and called on the Electoral Commission to ensure fairness and proper conduct during campaigns.
Kyagulanyi is expected in Bunyangabu district this morning before heading to Fort Portal City and Kabarole District the same day. He is scheduled to campaign in Kasese on Friday.
