Police in Nsangi have arrested a man identified as Mahad Sembuusi for allegedly stabbing to death an eight-year-old girl, Zainab, and injuring her father, Yunus Biseegerwa, in a violent altercation reportedly stemming from a dispute over a romantic relationship.

According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred yesterday when Sembuusi allegedly attacked Biseegerwa and his young daughter after being confronted over his relationship with a girl believed to be his stepsister. Biseegerwa, who is currently receiving treatment for his injuries, told police that Sembuusi is his stepson who developed a romantic relationship with his daughter—something he described as culturally inappropriate.

“I explained to him that he cannot be in a relationship with the daughter of his mother’s husband. That makes them siblings according to our culture. I warned him several times, but he continued making inappropriate advances. Yesterday, when I found him again with her, I confronted him. He picked a machete and attacked me and my daughter,” Biseegerwa narrated.

After the attack, Sembuusi reportedly attempted to flee but was apprehended by residents who handed him over to the police. Efforts to save young Zainab’s life by rushing her to a nearby clinic were unsuccessful; she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Zainab’s mother, Summayah Namutebi, has blamed her daughter’s death on what she described as her estranged husband’s “adulterous behaviour.” She claimed that Biseegerwa left her for another woman who already had grown children, one of whom was Sembuusi.

“The new woman was hostile and forced me out of my home. If my husband hadn’t engaged in an extramarital relationship, this tragedy wouldn’t have happened,” Namutebi said. Some relatives have further alleged that Sembuusi previously impregnated the girl at the center of the controversy, prompting the family to seek an abortion due to cultural taboos. However, police say this claim remains unverified as the girl in question has not yet recorded a statement.

Nsangi has witnessed several bizarre and tragic incidents related to domestic and relationship disputes. In one previous case, a father reportedly found his daughter in a compromising situation with her boyfriend inside his bedroom. After handing over the boy to the police, the father chose to spend the night in his shop out of embarrassment. He later returned home to find his daughter had taken her own life.
