At one of the post-victory events the new NRM Buganda region Vice Chairman Haruna Kasolo addressed immediately after being declared winner by Tanga Odoi, he mentioned names of the people he competed with and expressed readiness to work with each one of them.
After thanking the delegates and members of his campaign team for the win, Kasolo referred to candidate Hakim Kyeswa who pulled out for him and announced he was tasking him with a role to coordinate youth mobilization as the NRM squad hits the ground to market Museveni and other NRM candidates in Buganda. He said Kyeswa was a versatile mobilizer who understands well the language of the young people.
He mentioned Godfrey Kiwanda with whom he said he will be working very closely to harmonize conflicts among NRM cadres which could have resulted from party primaries. Kasolo says that engaging such leaders will be important to prevent the disgruntled ones from running as independents. He fears such will split the NRM vote and increase victory chances for the opposition NUP. He said Kiwanda will be generally helping him to identify such disgruntled NRM cadres and proceeding to meet with them to have them rehabilitated back to the NRM mainstream.
“We are going to have that program out of necessity because every vote and every voice is going to matter a lot as we count down to 2026,” Kasolo said while emphasizing the important role Kiwanda is going to play. “There is a lot that requires fixing. It’s a job that is doable but I can’t do it alone. We are going to have to build bridges to have everyone loyally on board to mobilize for the NRM.”
Kasolo also saluted his comrade Joseph Mukasa Sewava who he said would be vital in moving around the region. Kasolo also explained the need to re-energize the NRM village structures comprising of 30 people per village.
“Each of these has a spouse, children, close friends and people they employ. Once we galvanize that structure, our President Gen YK Museveni and all the other candidates will be home and dry,” Kasolo said making it clear he envisages nothing but victory for NRM in Buganda, a region delegates on Thursday entrusted to him during the Kololo vote.
Then very finally, Kasolo referred to Moses Karangwa who he said is a man of many talents which must be utilized to increase NRM victory chances in Buganda.
“We can’t afford to leave behind chairman Karangwa of Kayunga. He has potential to do many things for us in this campaign. He has connections of his fellow businessmen and most importantly, we shall be deploying him to promote our message against land grabbing because it’s actually the biggest challenge we are faced with as NRM and as people of this region called Buganda,” Kasolo sarcastically declared as people in his audience protested while chorusing “that would be a hard one for Karangwa.”
But seriously speaking, Kasolo has vowed to prioritize the mending of fences with Moses Karangwa who he says has followers and dedicated campaigners whose contribution can’t be disregarded.
“We need everybody on board and to move with us regardless of who they supported at Kololo,” says Kasolo who says remains open to engaging and mending fences with Karangwa because competing with each other for the CEC position shouldn’t make them enemies.
