The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Presidential candidate, Yoweri Museveni, has urged NRM leaders to step up mobilisation efforts in their respective electoral areas ahead of next week’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Museveni made the remarks on Saturday while interacting with NRM flag bearers at Iganga Senior Secondary School in Iganga District.
This meeting comes barely a week after Museveni met all L.C.III chairpersons from the Busoga sub-region at Okello House in Kampala. An audio message from the Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda, circulated across several radio stations in the Busoga sub-region, confirming the meeting and explaining that it focused on discussing effective mobilisation strategies.
The gathering brought together NRM flag bearers from village to district levels across the 11 districts that make up the Busoga sub-region, including Jinja City.
Security personnel, ranging from district police commanders and regional police commanders to resident district commissioners and other intelligence officials, also attended the meeting.
Museveni opened the meeting by reminding flag bearers of the NRM’s achievements in health, education, and infrastructure over the past 40 years. He described these accomplishments as the foundation for the current election campaign and encouraged flag bearers to fully appreciate the NRM’s contributions to the country’s progress.
He urged party leaders to sensitise the public about these achievements in the remaining days before the elections, stressing that highlighting tangible results is crucial for voters to choose a reliable government.
Museveni also appealed for high voter turnout for NRM candidates, emphasizing the importance of collective party support throughout polling days.
NRM lost Busoga to the National Unity Platform (NUP) during the 2021 general election, a defeat largely attributed to low sugarcane prices, human rights violations by fisheries protection unit personnel at the time, and unfulfilled road infrastructure projects, among other factors.
Several f NRM candidates praised Museveni’s engagement, noting that it provides guidance on improving results even in the final days before polling.
Namulondo, from Buwekula Ward, said mobilisation is a continuous process, explaining that voter outcomes can shift even hours before polling day for candidates who effectively package their campaign messages.
She added that the party chairman has re-energized them to peacefully convince voters using facts about the NRM’s achievements, rather than relying on intimidation or blackmail.
Similarly, Amina Tibikoma, a flag bearer from Bukamba Sub-county in Kaliro District, said the party has rallied to promote the NRM manifesto through social media platforms and direct phone calls, reminding voters of the importance of supporting NRM.
She expressed optimism that these efforts would not only boost support but also encourage higher voter turnout compared to previous polls. However, some anonymous NRM flag bearers acknowledged ongoing challenges such as poverty, healthcare issues, and unmet road infrastructure promises, which they said continue to frustrate grassroots communities and affect support for the government.
