Mbarara District Chairperson LCV Didas Tabaro has withdrawn from the 2026 district chairperson race, ending his bid for a second term.
Tabaro lost to Twongyeirwe Hygiene during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.
He opted to contest as an independent candidate and was nominated for the forthcoming general election.
Tabaro said his decision to withdraw from the race followed a meeting with the National Vice Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Nuwagira Micheal, alias Toyota, along with other senior party members.
“They persuaded me against contesting as an independent, urging unity within the party, so I now commit as a regional coordinator of PLU’’ he said.
Tabaro, the Ankole region PLU coordinator, pledged to devote his efforts to mobilising support for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Nuwagira welcomed Tabaro’s move, praising him for what he described as loyalty to both the NRM and the PLU.
Twongyeirwe expressed excitement upon receiving the information of the withdrawal of his opponent, noting that his withdrawal is a sign that the party supporters were getting united.
“Our president keeps calling for unity within the party, and this withdrawal is a sign of unity and victory for the party. If all NRM party-leaning independents can do the same, NRM would sweep landslide victories”. He said
Allan Musiimenta, a resident of Bwizibwera, expressed disappointment with Tabaro, saying that what has changed from what had forced him to contest as an independent. He said that all politicians are the same; they just trick their electorates into being part of their dirty game.
Tabaro’s withdrawal from the race leaves Twongyeirwe unopposed, joining the other District Chairpersons who are unopposed. Bushenyi’s Tuhaise Prosper Isingiro’s Alone Turahi, Sheema’s Jemmomah Buhanda, and Ibanda’s Happy Herbert Mayanja
