Masindi Central Police Station is holding 103 suspected criminals who were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Uganda Police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Sunday night.

The operation was prompted by complaints from residents, particularly the business community in areas such as Kijura, Kijungu, and Nyangahya in Masindi Municipality, regarding a rise in thefts and attacks by suspected criminals.

Among the 103 arrested suspects, 86 are men, and 17 are women. They were immediately transported to Masindi Central Police Station for screening. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, told URN that numerous complaints had been lodged about attacks on motorists, pedestrians, and residents by unknown assailants.

Hakiza added that some suspects were found in groups smoking marijuana in the early hours of the night, while others were discovered hiding in uncompleted structures within the municipality. The suspects are currently undergoing screening before being brought to court for appropriate charges.

Fred Atuha, a resident of Nyangahya Division, has called for more operations to be sanctioned by police and other security agencies, citing the increasing thefts and house break-ins in the area. Marion Kyalisiima, a resident of Kijura Cell, expressed concern over the prolonged raids by thugs in the area, urging the police to conduct more patrols to ensure residents’ safety.

In a similar operation in December 2024, police in Kakumiro arrested 115 suspected criminals terrorizing the district. The suspects, including 101 males and 14 females, were apprehended during an impromptu operation jointly conducted by the UPDF, police, and other security agencies in various areas of Igayaza Town Council and Kikwaya Trading Center in Kikwaya Sub-county.
