Local leaders and residents in UPK Kyambogo, Nakawa Division, have welcomed a community cleanup campaign led by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), describing the intervention as a timely effort that is strengthening sanitation and environmental management in the area.
The exercise, held on Saturday in one of Kampala’s informal settlements in Kyambogo, was led by KCCA Director for Public Health and Environment, Dr. Sarah Zalwango, who joined community members and local leaders in clearing garbage and sensitizing residents on proper hygiene practices.
The initiative is part of KCCA’s ongoing program to work directly with communities to improve sanitation, promote waste segregation and strengthen environmental health standards across the city.
During the exercise, garbage was collected and evacuated from the settlement, while residents were educated on proper waste management practices, including household waste separation and safe disposal. Food handlers operating within the area were also sensitized on hygiene and public health standards.
Zalwango said the authority will continue intensifying community engagement to ensure residents are equipped with knowledge and support to maintain clean neighborhoods.
“KCCA is committed to working with communities to promote proper sanitation and environmental health,” she said. “Through continuous sensitization and collaboration with local leaders, we can ensure that residents adopt good waste management practices and keep their surroundings clean.”
Local leaders praised KCCA’s presence in the community, noting that the authority’s engagement has strengthened sanitation awareness and support for better environmental practices.
Richard Bagarukayo, the LC1 chairperson of K6 Zone, said the cleanup exercise had energized residents and leaders to take greater responsibility for sanitation within the community.
“We are happy that KCCA has come on the ground to work with us,” Bagarukayo said. “Their sensitization is helping people understand the importance of sanitation and proper waste management.”
He noted that local leaders will complement the authority’s efforts by strengthening enforcement of sanitation standards and mobilizing residents to maintain cleaner surroundings.
“One of the challenges we face is that some people build houses without proper toilet facilities,” he said. “As leaders we are going to ensure compliance and also work towards constructing a public toilet to serve the community.”
Bagarukayo added that residents are now organizing themselves to manage household waste more responsibly.
“Every household is being encouraged to have a bag to collect waste before it is taken for disposal,” he said. “We also promise as leaders to improve sanitation in this area.”
Community members who participated in the cleanup said the initiative has helped raise awareness about hygiene and strengthened cooperation between residents and city authorities.
The Kyambogo exercise is part of broader efforts by the Kampala Capital City Authority to promote cleaner, healthier communities through regular cleanups, enforcement and continuous community sensitization across Kampala.
Local leaders and residents said they are ready to work alongside KCCA to sustain the progress made and build a cleaner city.
