The National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, on Monday commissioned the party’s eastern regional offices located along Kaliro Road in Iganga District. Kyagulanyi was accompanied by the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, and other senior party officials.

After cutting the ribbon, Kyagulanyi addressed cheering crowds, some of whom were accommodated inside the new premises while others stood outside due to limited space. He told supporters that the establishment of regional offices is meant to strengthen the party’s mobilization efforts across the country.

Kyagulanyi revealed that the project had been undertaken discreetly to avoid what he called political persecution. He explained that land for the office was quietly purchased, construction completed, and branding only done a few hours before the commissioning ceremony.

He further urged the First Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga, to join what he described as political forces that value her nationalistic character, rather than “holding onto positions where she is no longer needed.”

On his part, Bamu Lulenzi, the Mayor of Iganga Municipality, welcomed the development, saying the office will decentralize party activities and boost NUP’s visibility in Eastern Uganda. He noted that the facility will ease access to services such as membership cards and party materials without members having to travel to Kampala.

Phiona Nangobi, a party member, described the office as an inspiration to NUP’s largely youthful base, saying it reflects the party’s determination to achieve progress despite challenges. She added that such achievements motivate young people not only to engage in politics but also to invest in income-generating activities.

However, Kyagulanyi’s departure from Iganga was marked by tension as crowds lined major roads to catch a glimpse of him. Security operatives attempted to divert his convoy onto feeder roads but were overwhelmed by the numbers.

Police’s Field Force Unit (FFU) later fired teargas to disperse chanting crowds, clearing the way for smoother traffic flow. Despite reorganizing at several points, the groups were eventually dispersed in Jinja City, after which Kyagulanyi proceeded safely towards Kampala.
