The Karenga District Security Committee has held an extraordinary meeting to address the impact of election-related violence following the recent NRM primaries that were marred by protests and destruction of property.
The chaos erupted in July at the district headquarters after the NRM Electoral Commission delayed announcing results for parliamentary flag bearers for more than 48 hours. Angry voters stormed the tally center, breaking into the Women Community Hall, smashing doors and windows, and overturning tables in protest. The situation forced the commission to transfer results to Kampala, where winners were declared after nearly three weeks.
On Thursday, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Filbert Ocailap convened an emergency meeting with key stakeholders, including police and the UPDF, to find solutions aimed at ensuring peace and stability ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“We are committed to maintaining peace and stability in the district during this critical period. All stakeholders must work together for a peaceful and harmonious electoral process,” Ocailap said.
ASTU Commandant Francis Chemusto urged politicians and civil servants to avoid actions that could divide the community, emphasizing the need for unity during and after the elections. He advised candidates to forward cases of election-related violence to the Regional CID for investigation and accountability.
The committee resolved to hold a follow-up meeting aimed at reconciling political candidates, promoting joint campaigns, discouraging divisive rhetoric, and ensuring that perpetrators of election violence face the law.
