As livestock and poultry producers continue to struggle with recurring disease outbreaks, the Kapelebyong District Local Government is preparing to receive a gigantic containerized hybrid solar-powered cold chain refrigerator to improve vaccine storage and preservation within the veterinary department.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) selected Kapelebyong as one of 53 districts to benefit from the facility, which has a storage capacity of 1.5 million doses of veterinary vaccines for both livestock and poultry.

The unit will also include an office, a power-point area, 34 solar panels for renewable energy generation, a compressor for temperature regulation, and solar batteries capable of storing electricity for up to 48 hours without sunshine. According to Emmanuel Opio, Communications Officer for the Kapelebyong District Local Government, the district is expected to receive the mega hybrid solar-powered cold chain refrigerator on December 15, 2025, marking a major boost to vaccine storage and preservation.

Mega containerized hybrid solar-powered cold chain refrigerators are known for their reliability, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and mobility—making them especially suitable for districts with unstable or limited grid electricity. The hybrid system ensures uninterrupted operation by combining solar energy with backup battery or generator support.

Farmers such as David Ebilat, a resident of Acanipi in Alitot Sub-county, are optimistic that the agricultural economy will improve once the facility becomes operational. He says disease outbreaks have long affected livestock and poultry farmers, and having adequate vaccine storage will help tackle related challenges.
