The construction of Kanara Seed School in Kanara Sub-county, Kitagwenda District, has hit a snag after the contractor abandoned the site almost a year ago.
The 2.6 billion Shillings project under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UGIFT) programme was awarded to Skyworth Technology Service Limited in January 2023 to transform the educational landscape of Kanara.
The project included the construction of three classroom blocks, an administration block, two five-stance latrines, two units of staff quarters, a kitchen, a science laboratory, a playground, a multipurpose hall, and an ICT library.
Although it was originally slated for completion in August 2024, the deadline was extended by six months at the request of the contractor, citing difficulties sourcing construction materials.
However, according to Sedas Asiimwe, the Kitagwenda District Education Officer, since then, no work has resumed, and everything is at a standstill.
Asiimwe adds that when the six months had elapsed, the contractor asked for another renewal, which was denied because there had been no work done.
He adds that they took the matter to the Solicitor General and are awaiting guidance on the matter.
Engineer Ivan Ssewankambo from Skyworth Technology Service Limited told this reporter that he couldn’t comment on the matter and referred this reporter to talk to District officials about the issue.
