Brian Asingwire, the Kagadi district National Unity Platform (NUP) Chairperson, has defected to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party.

Asingwire announced his defection on Saturday afternoon at Muhorro BCS Primary school playgrounds in Muhorro town Council during President Yoweri Museveni’s rally.

Asingwire, who was also contesting for the Buyaga East parliamentary seat immediately after defecting, declared that he would not contest for the seat. He had served as the NUP Chairperson for Kagadi district for 6 years.

Asingwire, while addressing the gathering, said he had taken a personal decision after realising that remaining in NUP would not benefit him but rather put his future at stake.

He says he had been engaged by top NRM leaders who convinced him to abandon the NUP party for the NRM party.

Annet Anita Among, the speaker of parliament, who received the Asingwire, applauded him for crossing over, noting that the NRM remains the only party with a clear vision and inclusiveness.

His withdrawal leaves two candidates in the Buyaga East County parliamentary race: the incumbent Eric Musana Achaali, who is running on an independent ticket after he was defeated in the NRM Primaries, and Stephen Twesige, the NRM flag bearer.

On Thursday this week, Allan Clifford Tugume, a candidate for the Bugahya County parliamentary seat in Hoima District, defected from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and withdrew from the race.

Tugume announced his decision, declaring that he had crossed to the NRM and would no longer contest for the Bugahya County MP seat.

Tugume said he had taken a personal decision after realising that remaining in NUP would endanger his future.

He also demanded an immediate meeting with President Museveni to discuss the issues that had originally pushed him into the opposition.
