Festus Bahinyuza, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party aspirant for the Nkuringo Town Council district councilor seat in Kisoro District, has formally withdrawn from the race. In a withdrawal letter dated July 22, 2025, addressed to the NRM district electoral commission, Bahinyuza stated that his decision was entirely personal and made without any external pressure or coercion.
Speaking to our reporter on Wednesday evening, Bahinyuza explained that his last-minute exit from the race—just hours before the scheduled voting—was prompted by irregularities witnessed in the recently concluded party primaries for Members of Parliament. He noted that many candidates have voiced similar concerns. Bahinyuza further revealed that he is distancing himself from active party politics for now but hinted at returning to the race as an independent candidate during the 2026 general elections.
Following Bahinyuza’s withdrawal, journalist Denis Nsenga now remains unopposed in the race for the NRM flag bearer position for Nkuringo Town Council. Reacting to the news, Nsenga expressed joy, noting that the withdrawal had saved him time and campaign expenses. He also suggested that Bahinyuza might have anticipated a poor performance in the polls and decided to pull out to avoid embarrassment.
According to the NRM Electoral Commission roadmap, voting for district councilors in the party primaries is scheduled to begin on July 17, 2025.
