Hundreds of Catholics from Jinja City’s Central Business District (CBD) participated in the annual Good Friday “Way of the Cross,” walking through various streets while holding a large wooden cross. This event commemorates the suffering Jesus Christ endured during His walk to the crucifixion about 2,000 years ago.
As is tradition, the faithful marched through the streets, many of them barefoot, holding smaller crosses as a sign of solidarity with Christ’s journey. Their march symbolized the long and painful path that Jesus took toward His crucifixion. Assisted by the police and volunteer scouts who helped clear the roads to prevent traffic disruptions, some participants were seen kneeling at various junctions along the route, offering prayers as they walked.
Lilian Atim, one of the participants, shared her reflections on the event. “Reflecting on the cross allows me to elevate my dealings in life and seek forgiveness from those I’ve wronged,” she said. “Commemorating the Way of the Cross is not just a ritual; it’s an opportunity to evaluate myself and find ways to live better while still on earth.”
Atim emphasized that Jesus’ sacrifice should encourage Christians to foster harmony with their neighbors, instead of engaging in division. Christine Nangobi, another participant, expressed the hope the event provides in difficult times. “Jesus endured the pain of the cross, but He was later resurrected to life. This strengthens my faith and gives me hope to overcome life’s challenges,” she said.
Archileo Wandera, the assistant priest of St. Fatma Catholic Parish, also spoke during the procession, urging the faithful to raise their children with humility, following the example of Jesus Christ, who humbly obeyed God’s commands, even unto death on the cross.
Wandera encouraged parents to teach their children to navigate life’s challenges with humility, noting that such virtues would help them overcome difficulties with ease. He also highlighted that the power of the cross is not only a path to salvation after death but also a source of hope for living a better, more peaceful life here on earth-URN.
