The Uganda Human Rights Network for Journalists has condemned the ban on Nation Media Group-NMG journalists from covering Parliament’s activities.
Early this week, security at Parliament blocked and ordered journalists attached to Daily Monitor and NTV from accessing Parliament under unclear circumstances.
The HRNJ deputy director, Moses Magoola, said that the act by Parliament to suspend NMG Journalists from accessing the August House violates the law.
Magoola made the remarks on Friday while presiding over the closure of a four-day training of Journalists on digital security in Mbale city.
The participants were from different media houses at the national level and those operating in Bukedi, Bugisu, Teso, and Sebei.
According to Magoola, they shall continue to agitate for press freedom because the media has always been a main source of information that educates, sensitizes the public.
He also pledged that HRNJ shall continue to provide legal capacity building and advocacy on issues that arise in the country in relation to press freedom.
Magoola implored Journalists to remain united and focused on executing their duties amidst an unfair working environment, especially during this political season.
This is the second ban on the NMG journalists following that of not covering national events and institutions. It’s still not clear when the said media house will be allowed to cover the president’s meetings or access Parliament.
