An AK-47 gun that was stolen from a police constable attached to the Rwakaraba police post in Nyakishenyi sub-county, Rukungiri district, has been recovered.
The gun loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition was stolen from Constable Pius Muyambi on July 28, at around 8:30 pm. Muyambi reported for duty as usual, keeping his rifle inside his room adjacent to the police post counter.
However, when he stepped out for supper about 60 meters from the post, he left the gun in his bedroom. Upon returning to the post, Muyambi discovered that his room had been broken into, and the rifle was missing. He immediately alerted locals in the area, but there was no trace of the stolen gun.
A police sniffer dog was later brought to the scene but failed to track the criminals. Muyambi was arrested for questioning.
Apollo Kyangungu, Rukungiri District Police Commander, says the gun was recovered on Tuesday following an intelligence-led operation in the sub-county.
According to Kyangungu, the suspect behind the theft is currently on the run..
Wednesday Twinomujuni Nyakyishenyi, sub-county LCIII Chairman, hailed security for intervening and recovering the gun.
