Four people have been arrested over election-related violence in Buwenge town council, Jinja district. The suspects whose identities have been withheld are currently detained at Buwenge central police station.
The race for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag in Buwenge Town Council attracted four candidates: the incumbent Hassan Kinosa, Ismael Ozanya, Andrew Waseme, and Henry Kiswa.
Kiira Police Spokesperson, James Mubi, says that the suspects were arrested over their alleged involvement in different incidents of election violence. He says that the suspects are some of the ring leaders of election violence in Jinja district, whose actions have left their victims with permanent bodily injuries.
Mubi has since called upon all victims to file their complaints at the nearest police stations, which will ease the arrest of other suspects who are still at large.
Jinja Resident District Commissioner, Johnbosco Mubiito, says that they have minimised episodes of violence through deployments in all the black spot areas.
Mubiito says that they will ensure the successful prosecution of the suspects as a means of deterring future recurrence of related incidents.
Meanwhile, the registrar of NRM in Jinja district, Paul Kiwanuka, says that the election has been largely successful with minimal violent incidents in the rest of the seven sub-counties, save for Buwenge town council.
Kiwanuka says that this election is in-house and there is no need for people to hurt each other over supporting different candidates, yet they all share attributes of the NRM ideology.
