Former Wakiso District Chairperson Ian Kyeyune has secured the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag for the LC5 seat, ending a decade-long struggle to reclaim his political stronghold.
Kyeyune, who had lost in the last two NRM primaries, emerged victorious in the tightly contested race held on Thursday. According to results declared by district election officer Shaban Kalungi Kawooya, Kyeyune garnered 58,648 votes, representing 50 percent of the total ballots cast.
“I therefore declare Kyeyune Sengonzi Ian, who has polled the highest number of votes…as the duly elected NRM flag bearer for the position of Wakiso District Chairperson,” the declaration form reads in part.
Kyeyune’s closest challenger, Patrick Nakabaale, received 50,321 votes (42%), followed by Fred Mpanga Kigongo with 6,583 votes (6%), and Hajj Hussein Bujaasi Musoke with 1,566 votes (2%).
This victory marks a dramatic comeback for Kyeyune, who has previously served as the district’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC). In the 2020 primaries, he suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Masuliita Town Council Chairperson Moses Mayanja, polling only 2,291 votes against Mayanja’s 79,373. His first primary loss came in 2015, when he was edged out by Yona Nsubuga.
Wakiso District was carved out of Mpigi District in 2000, and Kyeyune was its first LC5 Chairperson but lost the seat in the 2011 general election to DP’s Matia Lwanga Bwanika, who has since served three terms. Bwanika, however, has opted not to seek re-election and is instead eyeing a parliamentary seat in Busiro South.
In mayoral races,Entebbe Municipality Mayor Fabrice Rulinda retained the NRM flag for the 2026 mayoral race, after securing 4,758 votes. He beat Michael Mutebi Kabwama, who got 1,755 votes, and Habib Kashiringi, who polled just 66.
In other municipalities, candidates went unopposed. These include Hamidu Nsubuga in Nansana Municipality, John Bosco Galabuzi Sserunkuuma in Makindye Ssabagabo, and Joet Matsiko in Kira Municipality.
