Lieutenant General Sam Okiding, the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, has urged young people not to underestimate the value of football, saying it is more than just a game—it is a profession and a source of employment that deserves serious recognition.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Gen. Okiding, who previously commanded the Field Artillery Division in Masindi, revealed how football influenced both his life and military career. He drew parallels between the sport and engineering, noting that the precision in making passes mirrors technical calculations.
“Football has shaped me in ways you may not realize. The way you pass the ball is not random; it involves careful calculations of speed and timing,” he remarked. Gen. Okiding explained that just as engineering structures depend on angles, football strategies are equally shaped by precision and planning. He recounted playing football during cadet training and throughout his service in the UPDF, affirming its profound impact on his personal and professional journey.
The General stressed that talent holds potential for employment and should not be underestimated. However, he expressed concern that in Teso, aspiring players often lack adequate support. Encouraging youth to pursue positive paths, he cautioned against engaging in dubious activities and instead challenged them to harness their talents for meaningful growth. As chief guest at the second edition of the Millennium Annual Games and Sports Tournament, Gen. Okiding recognized outstanding players from both teams, suggesting they could be nurtured to reach professional levels and join larger football clubs.
The tournament climaxed with Agirigiroi Future Stars FC defeating Akubui United FC 2-0 in a thrilling final at Kaler Primary School in Mukura Town Council, Ngora District. Simon Olupot opened the scoring just before halftime, and Julius Ekiru sealed the victory with a second-half goal.
Tournament coordinator Daniel Apieun highlighted that the event’s main goal was to unite the youth and engage them in constructive activities. Jacinta Ayoo, the Deputy RDC of Ngora, praised the players’ discipline and encouraged the youth to see football as a life-changing opportunity.
The winners, Agirigiroi Future Stars, walked away with Shs1 million and a football. Runners-up Akubui United FC also received Shs1 million and a ball, while Okunguro FC, who finished last, took home Shs200,000. Gen. Okiding further contributed Shs500,000 to each of the two netball teams from Mukura Town Council and Mukura Sub-County.
Ngora Woman MP Stella Apolot Isodo donated a football to each of the 24 participating teams, awarding Shs100,000 to the champions and Shs50,000 to the runners-up. Kapir County MP Dr. Abraham Isamat also offered Shs1 million, two netballs for women’s teams, and 24 footballs to all participating teams. Both legislators pledged to provide uniforms for the women’s netball sides.
The Millennium organizing committee rewarded Agirigiroi with Shs700,000, Akubui with Shs500,000, Okunguro with Shs300,000, and Doyoro Super Eagles FC with Shs100,000. Medals were presented to the best goalkeeper, coach, referees, and fans. The tournament, which started on May 4, 2025, featured 24 teams and officially concluded on August 31, 2025.
