Women in Uganda’s Teso region have been urged to take the lead in praying for peace as the country approaches the 2026 General Elections, with First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni highlighting their influence on families, communities, and national leadership.

Speaking at the launch of a three-day prayer camp organized by Destiny Community Development Initiative (DECODI) at Jeresar High School in Soroti city, the first lady, represented by Dr. Lorna Magara, emphasized that women can shape the nation spiritually and morally. She said, “If you raise a child, you shape a life; but if you raise a mother, you shape a nation.”

The First Lady called on women to pray against confusion, intimidation, and election-related violence, urging them to seek leaders whose hearts align with God’s purposes. She likened Uganda’s pivotal moment to Israel standing at the Jordan, saying women are being called to rise as intercessors to prepare the nation spiritually.

Highlighting the spiritual significance of elections, she noted that prayers can disrupt manipulative schemes, prepare voters’ hearts, and ensure God’s will prevails. She also contributed shs20m to DECODI to support the initiative.

Dr. Lorna Magara emphasized women as builders of families and communities, while Anna Akwango Elotu, CEO of DECODI, said the camp united church denominations to intercede for peaceful campaigns, particularly to protect mothers and children from election-related violence.

Pastor Dr. Betty Odongo, vice leader of the Interreligious Council, stressed the power of women’s prayers to prevent conflict and urged men to avoid inciting violence.
