David Calvin Echodu, an aspirant for the position of Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) – in charge of Eastern Uganda, has pledged to strengthen the party structures once elected. Echodu made the commitment on Saturday while meeting NRM delegates from Bugisu Sub-region at Mbale Secondary School.
According to Echodu, it is unfortunate that once the election season is over, party structures are often forgotten and abandoned. He says that NRM party structures need to be economically empowered and supported because they play a critical role in mobilization.
Echodu also condemned the practice of mobilisers from Kampala going upcountry to drum up support for NRM, stressing that the party structures in the different districts and cities should instead be used to mobilize.
He further accused some NRM leaders of telling lies and failing to honor their commitments after the election season. Echodu castigated some leaders for delivering endless historical lectures instead of addressing pressing problems like unemployment that have plagued the country.
Charles Walimbwa Peke, the NRM Chairperson for Manafwa District, said it is important for NRM leaders at the national level to engage party structures through meetings to understand the issues affecting the people. According to Walimbwa, most leaders disappear once elected and only return during election time.
Moses Wambogo, the NRM Chairperson for Mbale District, urged Echodu that once elected, he should consistently engage the party structures for feedback to continue building a strong foundation for NRM at all levels.
Maimuna Khayongo, the District Councilor representing Lwakhakha Town Council in Namisindwa, welcomed the plan of empowering structures and maintaining communication. Kyayongo noted that the position of National Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda is a ticket to the Central Executive Committee (CEC) and therefore structures should always be consulted on issues affecting the party on the ground.
Echodu will take on the incumbent, Flight Captain Mike Mukula, in an election scheduled at the NRM National Delegates Conference on 27th and 28th at Kololo Independence Grounds, Kampala.
