The Minister for Security, Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, has described the forthcoming general election as one of the most peaceful and easiest for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party to win. Muhwezi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County and NRM Chairman for Rukungiri District, made the statement following recent calls by opposition leaders from the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
The PFF, led by party president Elias Lukwago and vice chairperson for the western region, Kabale Municipality MP Thaddeus Nicholas Kamara, last week launched grassroots mobilization in Rukungiri District. During the launch, the opposition leaders urged the people of Rukungiri and all Ugandans to vote out NRM candidates, accusing the ruling party of harassing the opposition and failing to deliver meaningful progress to the country.
In an interview with our reporter in Rukungiri District on Sunday night, Muhwezi said the election is peaceful and favorable for the NRM due to what he described as visible government achievements. He noted that the NRM administration has succeeded in maintaining national peace, allowing even opposition politicians to freely criticize the government. He contrasted this with past regimes, where suspected opposition supporters were allegedly killed, and emphasized that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair.
Muhwezi further said that, as Minister for Security, he is satisfied with the calm security situation across the country and noted that presidential campaigns are generally proceeding peacefully. He acknowledged minor incidents involving National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, but said security officers handled the situations swiftly.
Despite criticism of security agencies for allegedly harassing Kyagulanyi and his supporters and restricting his rallies—particularly in Fort Portal and Gulu districts—Muhwezi defended the forces, saying they are performing well to maintain law and order while operating within the law.
According to the Electoral Commission road map, voting for the President and Members of Parliament is scheduled for January 15, 2026.
