A storm is brewing within the Democratic Party (DP) as the party’s leadership, led by Hon. Norbert Mao and Dr. Siranda, is set to hike nominations fees for the Party Presidency and Secretary General to a staggering 20 million shillings and 15 million shillings, respectively. This ploy has been met with fierce opposition from other competitors, who accuse Mao and Siranda of attempting to stifle competition and maintain their grip on power.
Mao, who is facing stiff competition from the likes of Sebamala, Elia Alitia, and Dr. Lulume, has been accused of deliberately failing the party. The DP’s cooperation agreement with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, signed by Mao and Siranda, has made the party deeply unpopular among the population.
In the previous elections, the DP secured a paltry 9 parliamentary seats, down from 15 in the 2016 elections. Party members are worried that if they don’t oust Mao and Siranda, the party will suffer even more in the 2026 elections.
The controversy surrounding the nominations fees has sparked a heated debate within the party, with many calling for a return to democratic principles and an end to what they see as Mao’s authoritarian leadership. As the party struggles to regain its footing, one thing is clear: the fate of the Democratic Party hangs in the balance.
