At least 134 aspirants have been vetted by the Democratic Front-DF party’s Electoral Committee to contest for various leadership positions in the greater Masaka sub-region.
On Tuesday, the DF Electoral Committee camped at Patel Shamuj gardens in Masaka City, for a two-day vetting exercise of candidates aspiring to contest on the party ticket in the next general elections.
The Commission, chaired by its Chairperson Henry Lubowa, vetted aspirants for members of Parliament, local government Chairpersons and councillors’ seats across the districts of the greater Masaka.
Lubowa indicates they have so far vetted nine candidates for MP positions Kimanya-Kabonera division, Masaka City Woman MP, Kalungu West and Kalungu East Constituencies in Kalungu district.
The others are for Bukoto Central constituency in Masaka district, Mawogola County and Mawogola County in Sembabule, as well as several aspirants for local government positions.
According to Lubowa, the majority of the positions have one aspirant, except in Masaka City, where they have vetted more than one aspirant for the same position.
He explains that in such circumstances, the aspirants are going to be subjected to an internal selection process by the party’s regional delegates committees to choose the most suitable candidates.
Joseph Emmanuel Kasirye, the party’s Electoral Commission Secretary, says they have vetted almost half of the aspirants and picked expression of interest forms in the area.
He says that they issued over 250 nomination forms to aspirants across the ten districts of greater Masaka, explaining that some of the people, especially in the distant districts, are going to be vetted from their respective areas.
He reveals that in the next days, the party Electoral Commission will move out to the districts of Lyantonde, Lwengo, Kalangala and Rakai to conduct the vetting exercise.
Abdunoor Kyamuddu, the DF Deputy President in Charge of Buganda, challenged the vetted aspirants to exhibit a high level of discipline while canvassing for support in their respective constituencies to uphold the party’s public reputation.
According to the party registrars, Masaka sub-region has so far presented the second largest number of people expressing interest in contesting on the DF tickets. It is second to the Teso sub-region.
It remains to be seen whether the Democratic Front will capture the Masaka sub-region, which in the last general election fell to the National Unity Platform (NUP), where it enjoyed enormous support.
