As Uganda prepares for the next general elections, the Democratic Front (DF) has placed constitutional and electoral reforms at the center of its campaign agenda — urging Ugandans to trust them with leadership based on a promise to restore integrity to governance.
Speaking at the official launch of the party’s campaign for Members of Parliament and local government leaders in Kimanya-Kabonera Division, Masaka City, on Monday, DF President and Nyendo-Mukungwe Division MP, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, said the party is determined to push for meaningful reforms in Uganda’s governance system.
Mpuuga explained that after several failed attempts to secure the desired reforms through Parliament, the party has now chosen to take the debate to the electorate — to help Ugandans appreciate its importance and to popularize it as a major issue for the coming elections. He appealed to voters to support the reinstatement of presidential age and term limits in the Constitution, describing it as a vital step toward achieving a peaceful political transition in Uganda.
Mpuuga also urged the electorate to challenge all parliamentary candidates on their position regarding the proposed reforms, emphasizing that broad support in the next Parliament will be necessary for meaningful change.
Juliet Kakande Nakabuye, the Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament seeking re-election, told voters that while political transition is important, Ugandans also need leaders who can demand a fair share of the national resource envelope. She cited various government projects implemented in the area as proof that having assertive and responsible leaders ensures development.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abed Bwanika, the MP for Kimanya-Kabonera Division, pledged that if re-elected, he will prioritize improving social service delivery in the community. “As we prepare for a new government, we must also ensure that our communities improve in the meantime. We cannot afford to lament; we have to use our brains to benefit our people,” he said. Bwanika cautioned the youth against campaign violence and engaging in confrontations with security forces, saying such behavior exposes them to unnecessary risks, including imprisonment.
