Construction of a surgical theatre at Kitgum Matidi Health Centre III in Kitgum Matidi Town Council has been launched.
This project, managed by the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Engineering Brigade, is expected to cost the government 500 million Shillings. Construction is part of the government’s efforts to upgrade the health centre to a Level IV facility.
Dr. Henry Okello Otto, the Kitgum District Health Officer, said that this upgrade is a long-awaited development that will significantly enhance healthcare services in the area. “The construction of the theatre is a crucial step in elevating the health facility to a Level IV standard,” Dr. Okello stated.
Lillian Aber, who also serves as the Kitgum District Woman Member of Parliament, emphasized that the construction reflects the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services in the region. “The establishment of the theatre at Kitgum Matidi Health Centre III demonstrates how much the government values healthcare delivery to the local community,” Aber remarked.
She added that there are plans to construct additional facilities to complete the health centre.
The UPDF Engineering Brigade will oversee the construction of the theatre over the next six months.
Jimmy Ssegawa Ebil, the Kitgum Resident District Commissioner, highlighted the partnership, noting the military’s role in supporting development projects in the country. “The Uganda People’s Defence Force is known for its transparency in executing public works compared to civilian contractors, which is why the government trusts them,” he explained.
Kenneth Oketayot Aroo, the Urban Chairperson of Kitgum Matidi Town Council, stated that the completed theatre will greatly impact the community, as all surgical operations will now take place there. “The health centre serves a large population, and this upgrade will enable it to provide better healthcare services, including emergency surgeries,” Oketayot said.
He said that this project is expected to enhance the quality of healthcare provided to the residents of Kitgum Matidi and surrounding areas, particularly for pregnant women who may require surgical intervention, and the initiative also demonstrates the government’s commitment to investing in health-URN.
