Robert Kasibante, the National Peasant Party (NPP) presidential candidate, failed to appear for his scheduled campaign program in the Tooro and Rwenzori regions.
Kasibante was expected to hold campaign rallies in Kasese and Bunyangabu districts on Saturday, and in Bundibugyo, Ntoroko, and Kabarole districts on Friday. He cited ill health and lack of sufficient resources to fund his campaign trail as the main reasons for suspending his planned activities in those areas.
Kasibante said he intends to review his campaign strategy and focus on mobilizing funds. He also appealed to the Electoral Commission to consider providing financial support to political candidates, especially those contesting for higher offices.
According to the Electoral Commission roadmap, Kasibante has no scheduled campaign activity on Sunday. John Mugume, a businessman in Kibito Town Council, said that although the NPP presents itself as a party for the common person, the absence of local party structures has weakened its visibility and support base.
“If that party had local mobilizers, even if its candidate didn’t come, they would be doing the work. But look—it’s my first time hearing about it,” the 29-year-old noted. Meanwhile, hundreds of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporters in Bundibugyo have stormed Ntandi Town Council to welcome the party’s presidential candidate, Nandala Mafabi. Mafabi is expected in the district this afternoon after campaigning in Ntoroko.
