A swarm of bees on Saturday afternoon plunged the National Unity Platform (NUP) campaign rally in Masaka City into chaos as hundreds of party supporters ran for safety to escape the stinging insects.
The NUP Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, was holding his campaign rally at the Buddu County headquarters playground in Katwe Ward when the event descended into a spontaneous stampede shortly after he entered the venue.
The bees brought the rally to a standstill as enthusiastic supporters fled into nearby buildings, while others exited the campaign grounds altogether. Kyagulanyi had entered the venue amid jubilation, with some supporters climbing trees. In the process, they interfered with a bees’ sanctuary located on one of the branches, triggering the attack.
A moment of panic ensued as a section of the crowd pleaded with the Police to help contain the bees and rescue victims who were crying for assistance. After several minutes of disorder, the Police intervened and lit a fire that produced smoke, which successfully dispersed the bees. Only then was Kyagulanyi able to begin addressing his rally.
