At least 42 suspected criminals have been arrested in a city crackdown.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said that the suspects were apprehended in an intelligence-led operation conducted jointly by the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).
The suspects were arrested in a crackdown targeting crime hotspots, specifically in areas such as Nakivubo channel, New Taxi Park, Namayiba Bus Park, and Namungona near the Northern Bypass last night.
Onyango said the operation targeted thugs involved in robberies and marijuana smokers, resulting in the arrest of 42 suspects. The suspects are currently detained at various police stations pending court proceedings. He said several exhibits were recovered from various hideouts during the operation.
Onyango said the success of the operation was a result of community members who cooperated and provided timely information, aiding in crime prevention.
“The suspects will be profiled to facilitate effective prosecution of habitual offenders, while collaboration with stakeholders and the community to reduce crime in targeted areas, including New Taxi Park, Namayiba Bus Park, and the Northern Bypass, will continue,” Onyango said.
The operations in these areas are a continuation of last week’s efforts, which targeted locations such as Kagugube, Wandegeya, Kitukutwe zone, Bulindo, Katuli, and Kidumpuli at night.
During the previous operation, over 50 suspected criminals were apprehended, and various items seized, including opium, khat (also known as mairungi), tools used for housebreaking, and crude weapons allegedly linked to robberies.
Police have noted that the intelligence-led operations are to be intensified to apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities, with the ultimate goal of restoring sanity and safety in various parts of the Kampala Metropolitan area-URN.
