Kyagulanyi is increasingly becoming sleepless regarding how to steady the NUP boat in Kawempe in the runner up to 2026
His own brother Fred Nyanzi is having his eyes on Bashir Kazibwe’s Kawempe south, a position which the current area mayor Dr. Emmanuel Sserunjogi Oweddembe is also considering having his eyes on too.
Sserunjogi has been everything in Kawempe except the MP office. He served as LC5 coucillor during Sebaana Kizito’s days as Kampala mayor and had also been an LC3 councillor prior to that.
He also served for 5 years as deputy division mayor under Nasser Takuba Kibirige. He became area mayor in 2016 when he rode on the Besigye/Lukwago wave to replace Mubarak Munyagwa who had left to become Kawempe south MP on the FDC ticket.
Sserunjogi Ow’eddembe was prepared to reluctantly seek reelection for 3rd term as mayor but his calculation recently became complicated when senior foot soldier Umar Magala (who narrowly lost the NUP flag race to Nalukoola) declared interest in the same seat and claimed to have been unleashed by Kavule.
Magala is young and organically popular among the NUP foot soldiers who are serious kingmakers in the party.
Magala’s people say that he is the right person for the job and to kick out Ow’eddembe because he will be more than ready to use the mayoral position to get garbage collection deals and car washing bay management tenders etc for the poverty-stricken NUP foot soldiers exactly like Nubian Li is being expected to do when he becomes the new Nakawa mayor replacing Mzee Paul Mugambe who foot soldiers say is as mean and conservative as Ow’eddembe.
So, Ow’eddembe is rightly scared that there is no way Magala can be stopped should Kavule go ahead to give him the NUP ticket. It’s the reason why he is being advised to blackmail Kyagulanyi by declaring interest in Kawempe south for which chairman Nyanzi is already being fronted.
Away from Magala, there is also veteran meal card politician Latif Sebaggala who is already out forcefully campaigning to become the new Kawempe mayor on the NUP ticket. His posters are already out everywhere and he is determined to force Ow’eddembe into political retirement.
Ow’eddembe had wanted Kavule to prevail and stop Latif Sebaggala after some foot soldiers, trying to frighten him into giving them something, went around claiming that the principal had personally instigated Latif because he was tired of Ow’eddembe’s meanness when it comes to parting with money.
